Constructed in Shepshed, circa 50 km northeast of Birmingham, the Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) is well-located from a logistical point of view with direct motorway access. This modern waste to energy plant with its exceptional design is now an important part of the UK’s waste management and treatment infrastructure. In addition to reducing landfill and overseas export of waste, the processing of non-recyclable domestic and commercial waste at Newhurst ERF also generates sustainable baseload electricity. The facility produces enough energy to provide the annual electricity consumption of around 80,000 UK households. With a net electrical efficiency of > 31%, at the time of commissioning the plant was one the most energy-efficient in the world. Despite challenges during the construction phase, including the coronavirus pandemic, extreme weather and global supply chain issues, the project was completed on schedule.
