Castelvetrano, Italy – Kanadevia Inova has been awarded a contract by Sicily Biomethan S.r.l. in connection with the development of a new Wet AD biogas plant with biomethane production in Castelvetrano, Sicily, Italy. The project, developed under the framework of the Italian legislative DM2022 biogas decree, will be realised under a Design, Finance, Build, Own & Operate (DFBOO) model through Kanadevia Inova’s 90% ownership and controlling interest in Sicily Biomethan S.r.l., which is the local project company.

Under a turnkey EPC contract, Kanadevia Inova will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the plant. The scope of work primarily includes anaerobic digestion technology, as well as feedstock pre-treatment systems, a biogas upgrading unit and composting facilities for the treated digestate.

The plant will produce biomethane from over 63,000 tonnes per year of input feedstocks, including OFMSW (Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste), food waste and green cuttings, using Kanadevia Inova's proprietary wet anaerobic digestion (Wet AD) technology. It will feature one processing line with a biogas production capacity of approximately 4,420,000 Sm³/y (520 Sm³/h). For gas upgrading, a membrane-based system from Kanadevia Inova’s M-Series will be deployed, converting the biogas into grid-quality biomethane in line with the plant’s processing capacity.

With a planned annual biomethane energy production of approximately 45.1 GWh (net), the project will make a significant contribution to sustainable energy supply and the promotion of the circular economy in the Sicilian region.

In addition, a long-term operation and maintenance contract with a duration of 20 years has been concluded and will be managed by Kanadevia Inova.

“This project underlines our strategic position in the growing renewable gas market in Europe. With our proven Wet AD technology, we are making a tangible contribution to decarbonization and the sustainable use of organic waste,” says Fabio Dinale, Executive Vice President of Business Development at Kanadevia Inova.

Nicolo Cariboni, Project Development Director for Kanadevia Inova Schmack Biogas S.r.l., adds: “Italy is a key market for biomethane projects. The Castelvetrano plant demonstrates how innovative technologies and strong local partnerships can be successfully combined to drive the energy transition while strengthening regional value creation.”
