Kanadevia Inova signs contract with SIG for the renewal of the Cheneviers Waste to Energy plant near Geneva

Geneva, Switzerland – Kanadevia Inova has signed a contract with Services Industriels de Genève (SIG) for the renewal of the Waste to Energy facility at the Cheneviers site in Aire-la-Ville near Geneva.
As part of the Cheneviers IV project, Kanadevia Inova will supply the new facility with two waste treatment lines serving as key components of the waste treatment process. The new plant will have a total annual waste treatment capacity of approximately 160,000 tonnes. Each line will be designed to process 10.5 tonnes of waste per hour.
The two new boilers will each provide approximately 35.8 MW of gross thermal capacity, with an additional 10 MW generated by flue gas heat pumps. A total of around 30 MWth will be available for Geneva’s district heating network. Replacing the existing plant, which began operating in 1993, will enable the Cheneviers facility to continue to treat the region’s non-recyclable waste efficiently and reliably while simultaneously recovering energy.
Renewing a long-standing Waste to Energy facility
The Cheneviers site has been treating waste and recovering energy for the canton of Geneva for decades. The existing von Roll Inova combustion and flue gas treatment systems have been in service for more than 30 years and will now be replaced by new technology.
Kanadevia Inova’s scope covers the core elements of the plant, from the waste feeding chutes through to the stack, including the associated cabling works. The current turbine will continue to be used and is therefore not included in the contract.
The project will be carried out while parts of the plant remain in operation. This requires careful planning of the different project phases and efficient use of the available space. The Cheneviers IV facility will be constructed on the site of the Cheneviers II plant section, which will be dismantled. Cheneviers III will remain in operation during construction and will be dismantled after the new facility has been commissioned. This phased approach will allow waste treatment operations at the site to continue throughout the construction period.
The project is expected to take approximately four and a half years to complete.
