About the Project

The Apensen biogas plant in Lower Saxony began operation in 2011, initially processing renewable feedstocks, mainly maize silage, to produce biogas to be upgraded in a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, and to biomethane. In 2024, it was upgraded with a second digestion line to process agricultural residues. A key innovation is the addition of CO₂ and biomethane liquefaction: captured CO₂ is purified and sold, while biomethane is converted into bio-LNG for low-carbon heavy-duty transport.

Solution

Expanding biogas production with manure-based feedstocks

The retrofit enables the plant to improve environmental performance and resource efficiency. Previously, upgraded biomethane was fed into the regional gas grid after amine scrubbing treatment. Today, the project creates additional value through the sale of liquefied CO₂ and bio-LNG, as well as greenhouse gas credits. The liquefaction systems are delivered through Kanadevia Inova’s DFBOO (design, finance, build, own and operate) model in partnership with Bioenergie Geest.
