Turkey’s first WtX plant is (at the time of completion) the largest in Europe. Located right next to Istanbul Airport, the plant, which commenced operations in 2021, has three lines thermally treating 15% of the solid municipal waste to generate 77 MWel of electricity for the 16 million residents. Construction of the plant created value in the region, with more than a fifth of all components manufactured by local companies and the construction itself relying 100% on local workers.
