Bulky waste detection

Part of our digital ecosystem Kanadevia Inova Pulse

Introduction

Modern Waste to Energy plants face increasing operational pressure: higher throughput, tighter safety requirements, and rising expectations for transparency and supplier accountability.

Kanadevia Inova brings clarity to this environment.

Our digital bunkermanagement solutions monitor every tipping gate, identify bulky waste, classify object types, and alert operators before disruptions escalate.

The result is simple: fewer surprises, cleaner operations, and safer decisions.

Advantages

The system detects bulky waste early enough to prevent feed hopper blockages before they interrupt operations. This reduces unplanned downtime and helps the plant maintain higher overall availability.

Operators rely on 24/7 automated gate monitoring instead of manually watching every gate. The system delivers clear, structured alerts that help them react faster and with greater confidence. The Object Identification module enables the differentiation between high-risk and low-risk objects.

Early detection reduces the need for operators to intervene near blocked or hazardous equipment. This lowers exposure to dangerous situations and supports safer daily operations.

Object Type Identification provides immediate insight into what the supplier delivers. These clear, data‑based records strengthen contract discussions and help enforce delivery expectations.

High detection rates (>80%) and very short alert latency (<30 sec) enable fast response and immediate operational savings. Depending on the amount of non-conforming waste delivered, plants can achieve payback in as few as 12 months, thanks to reduced downtime and lower recovery costs.

Case study

Results from pilot reference sites

The system consistently detects bulky items within seconds and provides operators with clear, usable images. Two early pilot installations have demonstrated clear value:

  • Over 80% of all relevant objects were correctly detected as bulky waste.

  • Below 30 seconds latency between waste tipping and operator alert.

  • Over 95% web‑app availability over six months of continuous operation.

  • 14 different object categories were detected and logged.

  • Over 95% identification rate for the selected non-conforming waste.

  • 100% of alarms acknowledged by operators—confirming real operational relevance.

In addition, pilot plants are expecting:

Over €100k in annual operational savings from reduced downtime alone and significant reductions in restart fuel consumption, health, safety, or environmental accidents, and maintenance hours.

These KPIs demonstrate the reliability and value of our bunker management solution in real plant conditions.

Users

The solution is designed for multiple user groups across the plant ecosystem:

  • Crane Operators

Crane operators rely on the system to stay ahead of non-conforming waste. They receive real‑time alerts for bulky items and hazardous or unusual objects, allowing them to react immediately. The web application helps them review the event image, confirm what has been detected, and decide how to proceed. With automated monitoring across all gates, they spend far less time scanning the bunker manually and can focus on safe, efficient feeding of the hopper.

  • Operation Managers

Operations managers gain a detailed view of what enters the bunker. They can review historical logs, study gate activity patterns, and understand supplier behaviour through object‑type insights. By linking detection events to avoided incidents, managers can clearly track how availability improves over time.

Web application

The user interface is designed to be clean, intuitive, and optimised for the environment of the operator.

Event list

The event list displays all current and historical events in a clear, chronological layout that makes scanning effortless. Operators can quickly focus on what matters by filtering events without navigating through complex menus.

Event details panel

The details panel opens with a clear image of the detected object and a simple layout that highlights the key information instantly. Operators can acknowledge the alert or add comments with minimal effort, making the workflow smooth and intuitive.

Settings page

The settings page offers straightforward controls to adjust detection thresholds and choose which object types should trigger alerts. Sliders, toggles, and clear visual cues guide operators through configuration without requiring technical knowledge.

Technical description

System architecture

The Bunker Management solutions consist of

  • A camera network positioned above or opposite the tipping gates, each camera covering ~4 gates.

  • On‑premise processing server for video recording and high‑frequency analysis.

  • An AI inference engine running object detection and identification models locally.

  • A web application accessible on desktop, tablet, or mobile for all operational roles.

Bulky waste detection (BWD) engine

The Bulky Waste Detection engine identifies large objects that exceed a configurable size threshold by using realtime computer vision models trained on thousands of field images. It generates event alerts that include an image with a bounding box as well as gate number and timestamp, and is designed for endtoend latency below 30 seconds from image capture to operator notification.

Object type identification (OTI) engine

The Object Type Identification engine classifies detected items into operationally relevant categories such as mattresses, pallets, IBC containers, trees, etc. It has already demonstrated a high recognition identification rate above 95% in validated cases and aims at supporting supplier reporting and wastecomposition analytics in the future.

Integration and operation

The solution interfaces run as a standalone web application. It is built to integrate with future digital modules such as traffic prediction, mixing‑area object detection, and crane automation, while automatically storing processed images and detection logs in line with data‑retention policies. Its integration into our customer portal, Pulse 360, will allow users to access bunker insights, events, and analytics within the same unified environment they already use for broader plant monitoring and performance management.
