Re-sourcing, a sustainable concept for recovering recyclable materials from residues
Thermal waste treatment produces residues which can be either recovered or landfilled. The principal components are slags and ashes, which consist mostly of non-combustible waste constituents such as glass, minerals, and scrap metals. Flue gas cleaning also forms reaction products. The volume and nature of the residues produced depend primarily on the waste composition and the process used in the specific treatment concept. With an intelligent secondary treatment process, much of these materials can be recovered. IBA (Incineration Bottom Ash) and fly ash treatment have an enormous recycling potential. Here we distinguish between three main concepts:
X2conmat™, which recovers construction materials and ferrous metals
X2metal™, which recovers ferrous and precious metals
Ash2Salt™, which recovers salts from the fly ash
By using recovered secondary materials, operators can not only reduce disposal costs but also create a new source of income that might help offset other growing costs and contribute to a circular economy.
