Introduction

Up to 70% of recoverable non-ferrous and precious metals in incinerator bottom ash (IBA) are concentrated in the fine fraction. Unlocking this fine fraction is critical to maximising recovery value from Waste to Energy (WtE) operations.

The Kanadevia Inova Grate for Riddlings (GfR), integrated within the X2conmat™ process, is specifically designed to capture this opportunity.

By upgrading conventional wet-discharge systems, Grate for Riddlings (GfR) enables the extraction of valuable dry fine material (0–10 mm) directly on the grate, increasing non-ferrous recovery and improving downstream separation efficiency.

Retrofit solutions are available for Kanadevia Inova grates as well as selected 3rd-party installations.

Description

GfR enhances metal recovery by incorporating a screening grate element with defined slit widths into the final combustion zone. This enables the fine IBA fraction, representing approximately 40 wt% of the total IBA, to be separated and discharged in a dry state before water contact.

Separation efficiency is supported by the mechanical sieving movement of the grate, combined with specially designed deflectors that promote effective fine material extraction. The separated dry fraction is discharged in a dust-tight mechanism for further processing. The remaining coarse fraction is discharged via the conventional wet extraction method.

By removing the fine fraction prior to quenching, GfR increases both the quantity and quality of the recovered nonferrous metals. Reduced residual metal content and lower moisture content in the remaining ash also contribute to lower transport costs and potential disposal costs.
